Gait Training

Gait training is mostly used for patients who must relearn a walking gait due to surgery or limb weakness.

Overview

Gait training is performed to encourage correct placement of limbs and normal weight bearing. This training is mostly used for patients who must relearn a walking gait due to surgery or limb weakness.

How does gait training work?

Gait training can be performed on a land treadmill, underwater treadmill, or on land with assistance and support to prevent further injury. Assisted ambulation devices may be used to slow the patient to allow correct placement of feet. Encouraging slow movements prevents the patient from moving quickly, causing avoidance of the painful limb, such as three-legged hopping, adopting an abnormal gait, or dragging the limb.
